How to interpret this
For the 6 cases with exact dates permitting completed-duration calculation, the mean is 1,077 days and the median is 263.5 days. Newly displayed cases with uncertain dates or unconfirmed ends are excluded from these statistics. A completed-sample mean is not an expected endpoint for a current conflict.
Mean duration applies only to completed cases with exact dates and does not represent unconfirmed or date-uncertain cases. Candidates labeled “6-month minimum unconfirmed” are not cases with a verified minimum duration and are excluded from observation counts and means. Repeated episodes of the same conflict are not independent samples. Episodes represent consecutive active conflict years, not uninterrupted daily warfare. Termination dates are neither agreement-signing dates nor the start of permanent peace; conflicts may recur afterward. These data cannot predict the remaining duration of a current conflict or the probability of peace. Termination-outcome data mainly cover determinations through 2023; annual activity data extend through 2025. The verification date, 2026-10-09, is not evidence that a war currently continues. Actor and territory names quote UCDP classifications; they are not political recognition or determinations of responsibility.
Conditions, methodology and sources
Termination outcomes are determined by auditing all 614 c_epid values in UCDP Conflict Termination v4.2024002. Uses start_date2/start_prec2 in the first row and c_ependdate/c_ependprec/c_epterm/c_outcome in the last row, covering cases beginning since 1976. Termination-data precision 1 is treated as daily, 2 and 3 as monthly, and 4 and 5 as yearly ranges; 6, 7 or missing precision is not used as an exact date. PRIO26.1 code 3 can represent a month or a 30-day interval, so a conservative range encompassing both interpretations is used. The minimum duration is met when the earliest possible end is on or after the latest possible start plus 6 calendar months. Month-end dates are adjusted to the final day of the target month. Terminated cases with unclear dates remain listed but are separated as excluded with null values and omitted from day-count statistics. Only precisely dated completed cases use differences between UTC midnights, without an inclusive-endpoint adjustment. Unended and new interstate cases are matched exactly to UCDP/PRIO v26.1 using conflict_id+start_date2, without overwriting existing termination-outcome dates with differently defined PRIO activity-end dates. An ep_end=0 value in the latest year means termination in the following year is unconfirmed. Uses month 1, day 1 of the last active year as the earliest activity evidence to determine whether at least 6 months can be demonstrated; candidates lacking proof are marked excluded from duration calculation. Elapsed duration is not extended to the verification date. Sources are explicitly attributed to Kreutz(2010), Gleditsch et al.(2002), Davies·Pettersson·Öberg(2026) and the Pettersson codebook v26.1.
