European energy crisis
2022
Reduced gas supply and surging prices exposed European industry and households to a cost shock.
Scope of the acute energy shock in 2022. The first day of the year is a sorting value, not the end of the entire crisis.
Conditions at the time
Europe’s dependence on Russian gas and the post-pandemic demand recovery increased vulnerability to supply constraints.
How events unfolded
Following the invasion, supply fell and prices rose, prompting alternative procurement and reduced consumption.
Stakeholders and impacts
Energy-intensive industries, households, power producers and national governments shared costs and supply risks.
Information available at the time
At the time, concerns arose over winter supply shortages and the possibility of gas rationing.
Findings confirmed later
A 2023 IEA assessment explained that weather, policies, efficiency improvements and production cuts jointly contributed to lower demand.
Alternative interpretations and limitations
Do not attribute all demand reduction to efficiency gains; also examine the costs of industrial production cuts.
Interpretation using later sources
The IEA's 2023 analysis records a 13% fall in EU natural-gas demand in 2022. Mild weather, efficiency and fuel switching contributed, alongside curtailed energy-intensive production. Similar consumption reductions therefore involved different costs. ASSETCASTING interpretation: Lower gas use alone does not establish a costless resolution. Separate lasting efficiency, temporary weather effects and sacrifices in production or living conditions when assessing the response.
