Trade and credit expansion with accumulating financial imbalances

2001.12~2008.08

A period examining trade integration and housing and credit expansion after China’s WTO entry, while including credit-market strains already underway from 2007.

Uses December (12) of 2001, when China joined the WTO, and August (8) of 2008, the month before Lehman’s failure, as exploration boundaries. It does not imply the financial crisis first began in September (9) of 2008; deterioration during 2006–2007 is included.

Conditions at the time

A period examining trade integration and housing and credit expansion after China’s WTO entry, while including credit-market strains already underway from 2007.

How events unfolded

International trade integration and US housing and financial markets expanded. Subsequently, a housing slowdown and mortgage-related losses spread through financial markets, revealing liquidity problems at major institutions.

Alternative interpretations and limitations

No causal link is assigned from China’s WTO entry to the financial crisis. Commodities, regulation, credit structures, and differences in national policies must be checked separately.

How to read editorial eras

Costs and policy capacity differed for households, companies, financial institutions, and governments. Check the national, industrial, and financial context of linked events rather than assuming everyone in the era shared the same experience.

Check linked events and policy announcements for information available at the time. Era names and representative-event selections are retrospective editorial choices; participants are not assumed to have known subsequent outcomes.

Interpretation using later sources

Housing-credit expansion and securitization formed part of the background to losses spreading through financial markets. Federal Reserve history presents competing accounts of the roles of low rates, global savings and securitization. The coincidence of trade expansion and financial imbalances does not establish that trade caused the crisis.
