The purge that emptied the high command invited miscalculation 4 years later

The military purge that began with the June (month 6) 1937 execution of 8 men including a Soviet marshal emptied the high command, and on June (month 6) 22, 1941 the Barbarossa surprise met countless ignored warnings. The purge, vacuum and miscalculation chain is checked against sources, with differences from today's China kept distinct.

When purges empty the high command, how does war judgment change?
Verified facts

The purge's scale: 3 of 5 marshals and most generals

In the end 3 of 5 marshals, 90% of army generals and 80% of colonels were purged, with lesser officers estimated at 3 ten thousand to 3 ten thousand 4,000. Of these 1 ten thousand 1,500 were reinstated, and 30% of officers purged in 1937~1939 were allowed back. Figures vary by study, but agree that most of the senior command was cut away.

Verified facts

At dawn on June (month 6) 22, 1941, surprise came atop warnings

At 3 in the morning on June (month 6) 22, 1941 German forces invaded, and forward outposts got only disbelieving replies. By one count 87 warnings ran from agent Sorge and Churchill and Roosevelt to a German sergeant's defection the day before, yet Stalin was caught flat-footed. Calling mobilization war, he refused border alerts and full mobilization, ignoring reports of German troop movements.

Interpretation

The chain that worked: purge, vacuum, miscalculation

The command purge halted deep-battle doctrine's growth, connecting to judgments that the Red Army proved inept at offense and defense with staggering losses. Political commissar vetoes and blocking detachments hardened loyalty reporting, followed by ignored warnings and an unready surprise. The purge reads as degrading warfighting ability and judgment quality rather than breaking the will for war.

Limitations

Disputed numbers and distance from today's China

Figures like 90% of generals must be read with revised estimates of 3.7~7.7% of the whole officer corps, many merely expelled. The 1941 disaster also mixed non-purge causes such as surprise, doctrine and deployment. This case must not be overlaid on today's China, whose nuclear, surveillance and information setting differs, to prophesy an invasion date.
