An index gain, a leveraged ETF loss: an observed holding-period gap
Actual SEC-FINRA examples distinguish daily multiple targets from holding-period returns.
Updated Oct 19, 2026
Does getting index direction right determine a leveraged product’s holding-period return?
Observed performance
From year 2008 month 12 day 1 to year 2009 month 4 day 30, one index rose 2% while an ETF targeting 2 times its daily return lost 6%. Another index gained about 8% while its daily 3 times ETF lost 53%. The SEC-FINRA alert does not name the products.

Staged purchases do not remove daily resetting
A daily target is not a cumulative-return promise. The video’s sideways and renewed-decline scenarios call for examining daily paths and holding periods, not just entry prices.

Not a forecast for today’s products
These are historical observations, not expected SOXL or TQQQ losses. Current prospectuses, costs and benchmarks require separate checks.
