Dark forces moving the stock market... do they really exist?
- What to look for
- Use accounts of VIX trading, skepticism about news and report-writing experience to distinguish different kinds of investment information.
- Why it matters
- Separate index, futures and investment-product returns, check a report’s data, estimates and conclusions independently, and verify the exact index involved in a deletion.
Timeline
5 segmentsVIX is an implied-volatility measure for the next 30 days derived from S&P 500 option prices, distinct from CNN’s Fear & Greed Index. Related ETFs and ETNs may track futures-based indices, so spot VIX percentage changes cannot simply be treated as product returns, and anecdotes about always profiting at particular index levels are not adopted as validated strategies.
An independent exercise, not a statement by the video creator or verification of every claim in the video.
A 50% rise in VIX does not mean a 50% return on your product
In a hypothetical scenario, spot VIX rises from 20 to 30, a change of (30-20)/20=50%. If the held futures contract rises from 25 to 27 over the same period, its price change is (27-25)/25=8%. With initial assets of 100 and initial futures notional exposure of 100, holding only that contract gives a simplified pre-cost gain of 8. Before translating a spot-index change into an investment return, check the product’s underlying index, contract maturities and weights, target exposure multiple and holding period.
Check for yourself
- Does the product follow spot VIX, a particular futures maturity or an index combining several contracts?
- Have returns been checked after rolling, daily rebalancing and fees?
- Have trading levels mentioned in the broadcast been confused with the product’s price?
Limits of application
All prices and exposures are hypothetical. The example assumes an unchanged contract and initial notional exposure equal to assets, excluding rolling, daily rebalancing, fees, collateral interest and currency effects. It predicts neither actual product returns nor suitable entry levels and does not guarantee a return to any index level.
