AfreecaTV’s Earnings Disaster: Operating Profit Slumps 58% — Why Is Star-Balloon Platform SOOP Struggling?
- What to look for
- Consider whether formats that maximize donations also appeal to ordinary viewers, and how short-term monetization connects with a durable audience.
- Why it matters
- Separate audience size, payments, advertising, streamer retention and costs to assess the earnings decline and new investments using appropriate criteria.
Timeline
4 segmentsSOOP’s Q2 2026 IR shows revenue down 11.2%, operating profit down 57.9% and operating costs up 5.0% year-on-year. Platform revenue fell 12.3% year-on-year but rose 0.1% sequentially; management discusses one-off costs and expectations for improvement, establishing neither permanent decline nor certain recovery. Beyond donation revenue, test repeat visits, content appeal and whether costs recur.

Decompose Why Operating Profit Fell Much Faster Than Revenue
Rounding the company’s IR figures to hundred-million-won units, prior-year revenue of 1,169, operating costs of 869 and profit of about 300 became current-quarter revenue of 1,038, costs of 912 and profit of about 126. A revenue decline of 131 plus a cost increase of 43 explains a profit drop of about 174. Dividing that drop by prior profit of about 300 produces a much larger percentage decline than the revenue decline. Use this rounded bridge to examine recurring costs and separate year-on-year from sequential platform-revenue changes.
Check for yourself
- Do revenue and operating profit use the same consolidation scope, quarter and prior-year comparison?
- Have one-off costs been separated from expenses likely to recur?
- Have cash outflows for asset purchases been kept separate from operating expenses?
Limits of application
This independent bridge rounds preliminary Q2 IR figures, so it differs from exact monetary changes. It does not establish which costs are one-off or prove that a particular content format caused lower revenue. Income tax is below operating profit: do not confuse one-off tax costs with operating expenses. Management’s recovery expectations do not guarantee future results.
