A former Tesla engineer’s perspective on Hyundai Motor’s challenges (author Maeng Sung-jun)

What to look for
Explore how connecting controllers, software and test data changes engineering work. Compare integration benefits with the cost of changing existing models, suppliers and organizations, alongside alternative strategies.
Why it matters
Assess software capability by asking about code-change rights, data access, cross-team coordination and validation-to-release time rather than feature counts alone. Distinguish service areas, vehicle types, supervision responsibilities and validation conditions when evaluating automated driving.

Timeline

8 segments
  1. The guest describes how internal tools, controllers and remote data changed testing, analysis and updates. The issue goes beyond having over-the-air updates to who can make a needed change and how quickly the result can be validated. His example of using models to adjust test conditions requires a validated scope and uncertainty controls, rather than implying that models can always replace physical tests.

Waiting for a change can take longer than doing the work

Suppose a change requires 2 days of actual development and validation plus 8 days waiting for another team or supplier, for 10 days in total. If AI reduces the actual work to 1 day but waiting stays unchanged, the total becomes 9 days, an improvement of 10%. Keeping 2 days of work while changing authority and coordination to reduce waiting to 2 days instead yields 4 days in total, a reduction of 60%. Record work and waiting separately when assessing tools, and do not count time saved by skipping safety validation as an improvement.

Check for yourself

  • In the last change, how much time went to development and validation versus approvals and responses?
  • Who has authority to change code and data, and can waiting be reduced without merely moving the bottleneck?
  • How will regression errors, safety validation and maintenance costs be checked as release speed increases?

Limits of application

These are hypothetical figures, not measured Tesla or Hyundai development times. Sequential work is assumed; parallel tasks, shared staffing and statutory approvals require separate analysis, and insourcing is not established as universally best.
