If you fail to build capital before humanity’s first half ends, you could be in serious trouble: what I talk about most these days

What to look for
Examine how investment objectives change between accumulating and drawing down assets, and how the speaker extends that framework to AI-driven labor replacement.
Why it matters
Before treating average age profiles as a personal retirement schedule, compare pensions, actual spending and debt, and distinguish anxiety about technology from investment risk you can afford.

Timeline

4 segments
  1. The speaker uses humanity’s first half as a metaphor for his forecast that AI and robots will reduce labor-income opportunities and increase the importance of owning capital. This is a technological forecast, not an established conclusion that all labor-income opportunities will disappear or that asset ownership guarantees a livelihood. The supplementary ILO analysis of generative AI and occupations distinguishes exposure from actual job losses, making it useful to separate job transformation, substitution and complementarity.

A fall in labor income does not by itself establish a household deficit

Hypothetical comparison: assume monthly retirement consumption is KRW 2.5 million, after-tax pension income is KRW 1.6 million and there is no other income. The monthly shortfall is KRW 900,000, or KRW 10.8 million annually. With KRW 270 million in withdrawable assets, the first-year shortfall equals 4% of those assets. If monthly consumption is KRW 3 million, the annual shortfall rises to KRW 16.8 million, about 6.22% of the same assets. This calculates how spending changes the withdrawal requirement; it does not calculate a safe withdrawal rate or a sustainable duration. Statistics Korea’s 2023 National Transfer Accounts measure average age-specific consumption minus labor income and cannot replace a personal plan incorporating pensions, asset income and household composition.

Check for yourself

  • Does my monthly shortfall include after-tax pensions, loan payments, medical costs and irregular expenses?
  • Have I separated spendable assets from assets such as an occupied home that are difficult to draw down immediately?
  • How would expected income and saving years change if I separate the parts of my work that AI substitutes for from those it complements?

Limits of application

The hypothetical calculation excludes investment returns, price changes, inflation, fees, withdrawal-related taxes and lifespan, and recommends no particular index or allocation. The ILO analysis of generative AI exposure and the linked customer-support study do not predict the timing of a complete disappearance of labor or an individual’s future income.
