Roblox (RBLX) company analysis: why it is rebounding during a market sell-off | Claire and Park Se-ik [26.10.17.]
- What to look for
- Examine how creator and user networks translate into revenue and costs, distinguishing growth potential from earnings visibility.
- Why it matters
- Separate the timing of bookings, revenue, operating profit and operating cash flow, then calculate future net margins, dilution and valuation multiples separately to assess both platform narratives and the price paid today.
Timeline
7 segmentsThe closing discussion links differences between operating cash flow and accounting results to stock compensation and revenue recognition for Robux purchases. Official accounting policy recognizes consumable items when consumed and durable items over an estimated usage period, so not every payment is spread uniformly over 27 months. Adding stock compensation back as a non-cash cash-flow adjustment does not eliminate economic costs or dilution, and revenue deferral does not guarantee future profitability.

Per-share value need not grow as fast as revenue
Suppose a hypothetical company has current annual revenue of 100, market capitalization of 1000 and 100 shares. Its P/S is 10 and its share price is 10. Revenue growing 20% annually for 5 years reaches about 248.8. Assuming a 10% net margin and a P/E of 25 then implies net income of about 24.9 and market capitalization of about 622.1. If shares increase to 120, value per share is about 5.18, roughly 48.2% below today. Revenue growth alone therefore cannot determine returns. These are assumptions, not achieved margins or justified multiples, and the calculation uses net margin rather than operating margin. Record revenue growth, net margin, future P/E, share count and the discount period separately, and examine how stock compensation, deferred revenue and capital spending affect cash flow.
Check for yourself
- Is the future earnings measure operating profit or net income attributable to shareholders?
- Are the current sales multiple and future P/E connected consistently?
- Are dilution from stock compensation and the period for discounting future value included?
Limits of application
This unitless hypothetical company calculation is not a Roblox revenue, price-target or return forecast. Intermediate calculations use unrounded values; dividends, buybacks, interim financing, actual taxes and present-value discounting are excluded. Positive cash flow and achieving a future net margin are separate conditions, and results are highly sensitive to assumptions.
