The trader doing better than Warren Buffett these days

What to look for
Use Druckenmiller’s macro trades and dot-com losses to separate analysis, position size, psychology and the ability to exit.
Why it matters
Test investment assumptions by separating expensive valuation from timing, others’ profits from one’s own entry thesis, and current earnings from sustainable earnings.

Timeline

4 segments
  1. The dot-com story distinguishes expensive valuation from the timing of a decline and evidence-based changes of view from re-entry driven by others’ gains. Large positions may take time to exit because buyers are needed, and a profitable calendar year does not mean an absence of interim losses or risk. Recovery after a break is an account in the video, not a promise of similar recovery or a reason to use leverage to recoup losses.

What happens to a low current P/E if earnings fall?

A hypothetical company priced at 100 won with annual earnings per share of 10 won has a P/E of 10. If the share count and price stay unchanged while earnings per share fall to 5 won, its P/E becomes 20. If the market still pays only 10 times earnings, the assumed price is 50 won, or 50% below the initial 100 won. Check whether current earnings are at a cyclical peak and whether new orders and customers’ capital spending can sustain them. This is an assumption about durability, not a claim that reported earnings are fabricated.

Check for yourself

  • Does the low P/E use current earnings or earnings assessed across different phases of a cycle?
  • If order growth slows, how do margins and fixed-cost burdens change alongside revenue?
  • Are the prospects for adoption of a technology being confused with returns available at today’s price?

Limits of application

Prices, earnings and P/E ratios are hypothetical and assume a fixed share count, positive earnings and an unchanged valuation multiple. Actual prices also reflect rates, growth expectations, cash flows and changing multiples. This calculation does not predict results, share prices or trade timing for any particular AI company.
