Semiconductor selloff: short-term breaks, long-term support and AI investment recovery
SOXX and Nasdaq100 futures are below short- and medium-term moving averages but remain above their 200-day averages. The US 10-year yield has retreated from a recent high yet remains above medium- and long-term averages. Neither a losing streak nor a yield retracement establishes a bottom: price recovery needs to be assessed alongside AI investment cash recovery and funding conditions.
Key judgments
01SOXX at 493.39 USD and Nasdaq100 futures at 29,391.50 points are each below their 20-, 60- and 120-day averages. A short-term bounce is not the same as reclaiming those averages.
02Both prices remain above their 200-day averages, so a long-term trend breakdown is not established. A 200-day average is a potential support reference, not a guaranteed rebound level or protection against loss.
03The US 10-year yield is 5.081%, below its 20-day average but above its 60-, 120- and 200-day averages. Its displayed daily change is +0.002 percentage points. A retreat from a recent high must not be confused with a same-day yield decline.
04Growth in AI demand is not the same as investor returns. Order-to-cash conversion, customers' ability to pay, debt maturities and funding terms matter; these charts alone cannot establish distress at a particular company or financial contagion.

Technical analysis
Price positioning has weakened, but whether the long-term trend breaks remains unresolved. SOXX's 60-day average at 533.15 USD and 120-day average at 543.76 USD are recovery references, with its 20-day average higher at 559.97 USD. Nasdaq100 futures are also below the 120-day average of 29,624.09 points and the 60-day average of 29,795.41 points. These are moving references at capture time, not fixed price targets.
Supporting evidence
- The SOXX chart displays a latest close of 493.39 USD, a change of -4.14% and a latest-bar low of 492.83 USD. Displayed volume is 14.67M shares.
- The Nasdaq100 futures chart displays 29,391.50 points and -2.50%. Like SOXX, it is below short- and medium-term averages, but spot ETF and futures changes are not treated as directly comparable returns.
- SOXX's 200-day average is 467.63 USD and Nasdaq100 futures' 200-day average is 27,876.67 points, both below their displayed prices.
Counterevidence
- Being above the 200-day average does not establish the end of a correction. Lower highs below medium-term averages after a bounce could leave the weak price structure intact.
- The supplied charts do not provide an independent recalculation of historical losing-streak records, volume increases versus an average or subsequent returns. A large decline alone cannot guarantee the next move is upward.
Conditions to watch
- Observe whether SOXX stops extending its lows near the latest-bar low of 492.83 USD, then whether it reclaims and holds the 533.15~543.76 USD area.
- Watch whether Nasdaq100 futures reclaim the 29,624.09~29,795.41-point area. A bounce below that area is initially distinguished as a technical retracement.
- If price approaches the 200-day average, assess closing-price positioning and the following bar together. Refresh the moving-average values with each new daily bar.
Macro connections
Treasury yields and corporate funding costs must be assessed separately. A retreat in the risk-free rate may not remove pressure on companies or equities if credit spreads or equity risk premia widen. A Treasury-yield decline driven by growth concerns could also be unfavorable for earnings expectations. These are channels to investigate, not established causes of this selloff.
Supporting evidence
- The US 10-year yield of 5.081% is below its 20-day average of 5.180%, but above the 60-day 4.888%, 120-day 4.689% and 200-day 4.499% averages. Short-term cooling and a higher medium- to long-term yield backdrop coexist.
- The displayed +0.002 percentage points is the change in the yield level; the accompanying +0.04% is a relative change. These units must not be confused or described as a same-day yield decline.
Counterevidence
- The supplied material contains no raw corporate-spread, issuance-yield or CDS series, and no oil chart. It does not establish a credit squeeze, an oil shock or a change in policy probabilities.
- If Treasury yields decline further while corporate funding conditions improve, easing discount-rate pressure could help price stabilization. Rates alone do not determine the equity-price path.
Conditions to watch
- Distinguish whether a Treasury-yield decline accompanies changes in real yields, inflation expectations or growth concerns.
- Check relevant companies' actual bond trading, new financing and refinancing terms, comparing spreads to maturity-matched Treasuries.
Industry and company connections
Weakness in a semiconductor ETF should not be transferred into an identical crisis at every constituent. For AI infrastructure, who funds investment and from what cash flow matters separately from demand growth. Examine conversion of contracts into revenue, receivables and cash, alongside customer concentration, debt maturities and additional investment commitments. Possible transmission of funding stress is a hypothesis to assess, not a finding of default or confirmed support at a particular company.
Supporting evidence
- SOXX is an ETF comprising semiconductor companies. ETF prices, individual companies' results and major customers' investment recovery are different units of analysis.
- Even large orders or backlogs can translate into different cash inflows depending on customers' ability to pay, cancellation or amendment terms and collection timing.
Counterevidence
- Charts do not directly show order cancellations, customer payment delays or deteriorating operating cash flow. Price weakness is not substituted for evidence of an industry-demand collapse.
- Resilient cash collection and profitability, with diversified debt maturities, would weaken the funding-stress hypothesis. Assess actual commitments and capacity to perform rather than support possibilities alone.
Conditions to watch
- Compare AI revenue growth with operating cash flow, receivables collection and capital expenditure.
- Review shipments, selling prices, yields, inventory and expansion costs by company. Memory, equipment and chip-design businesses do not share an identical earnings structure.
- Assess claims of continued or reduced investment and liquidity support only after checking disclosed contractual scope, conditions and actual implementation.
Scenarios
Support holds and recovery develops
Price stabilizes above long-term averages and reclaims medium-term averages, while corporate cash collection and funding conditions remain resilient. That would reduce the weight placed on broad financial-contagion concerns without guaranteeing further gains.
Conditions to watch SOXX and Nasdaq100 futures reclaim medium-term averages and hold them on subsequent bars. · Cash collection, profitability and financing data do not support the deterioration hypothesis.
Invalidation conditions Prices make fresh recent lows soon after recovery, or actual financing conditions deteriorate.
A relief rally without trend repair
Prices rebound after the selloff but remain below medium-term averages, without follow-through from earnings or cash-flow evidence. A single up day or comments about support do not establish that risks are resolved.
Conditions to watch Even after retracing part of the decline, SOXX and Nasdaq100 futures form lower highs below their breakdown areas.
Invalidation conditions Sustained price recovery is accompanied by improving corporate cash metrics.
Long-term support and cash flow deteriorate together
A break of long-term price support coincides with deterioration in actual financing and cash collection. Treasury-yield direction alone would not resolve funding pressure, making differences in company balance sheets more important.
Conditions to watch Prices close below their 200-day averages and fail to recover on the following bar. · Actual data show worse issuance or refinancing terms, collection delays or reduced investment.
Invalidation conditions Prices quickly reclaim long-term averages while financing and cash data stabilize.
Next checklist
- Have the trading date, price-adjustment setting, futures contract and rollover setting been checked?
- Are the semiconductor ETF, spot Nasdaq index and Nasdaq100 futures distinguished?
- Is the yield change from its recent high distinguished from the same-day change?
- Is moving-average recovery assessed separately from the size of a bounce?
- Are demand forecasts and backlogs distinguished from collections and cash flow?
- Do claims about distress or support have disclosed evidence and implementation behind them?
- Has the evidence that would invalidate the current hypothesis been specified?
